Ford F-150 Lightning Wins Star Award – Dubai Car News

2022 The STAR Awards help judge the who’s who of various automotive disciplines, and perhaps none have more diversity than our truck category. Although every entrant was powered this year – a sign of the times, no doubt – they represented three different size classes, ranging from 191 horsepower to even 1,000. And it ranged in price by about $100,000 from the cheapest to the most expensive entry. .

While some competitors felt unnecessarily overkill and others felt a little ungainly, one struck a very pleasant balance between futuristic technology and true truck bona fide, with a familiar element to the ride. was included. The all-electric 2022 Ford F-150 is Lightning. Star Award Winner for Best Truck. But despite its perfect styling, the F-150’s victory didn’t come easily, facing off against the charming Ford Maverick, the rugged and powerful Toyota Tundra, and the attention-grabbing GMC Hummer EV. Each offers its own unique set of strengths and weaknesses, and Lightning had to fight for its title.

What we seek.

The Best Truck award looks at capabilities, including technology that helps with towing and hauling, off-road capability, and everyday use. Trucks are, for the most part, larger and heavier than sedans and crossovers, so there are some considerations for everyday use as well. Finally, overall comfort — ride quality, drivability, interior quality and packaging — plays a role, as North America is a truck market and there’s no shortage of consumers who buy trucks whether they want them to work or not. Do not intend to use it.

Quick stats 2022 Ford Maverick XLT Hybrid
engine: 2.5-liter I4 w/permanent magnet motor
Output: 191 horsepower
Stretching: 2,000 pounds
Payload: 1,564 pounds
Tested Price: $25,440

Sharing much of its architecture with the ho-hum Escape crossover and its standard hybrid powertrain, the 2022 Ford Maverick can’t stand up to scrutiny from its traditional truck rivals, right? Surprisingly, it did. The Maverick earned its accolades thanks to a stylish and practical interior, borderline-athletic handling, and a comfortable ride, and its efficient hybrid powertrain did nothing to hurt its woes — 42 mph in the city. gallon and 33 highway, with a combined rating of At 37 mpg, these numbers are the highest of any non-electric vehicle with a Star Award, truck or not.

But fuel economy and maneuverability aren’t usually high priorities for truck customers, and the Maverick we tested didn’t really offer much in the way of towing ability or off-road performance. That’s because the hybrid Maverick is a front-wheel-drive affair, with all-wheel drive only available on the more powerful (but less efficient) EcoBoost model. The hybrid is also limited to a 2,000-pound towing capacity, though its 1,564-pound payload rating would have been in the realm of a full-size truck just a generation or two ago. As good as the Maverick is, there are better pickups out there if you really need a truck to work.

Quick stats 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1
Motors: Triple permanent magnet motors
Output: 1,000 horsepower / 1,200 pound-feet
Stretching: 7,500 pounds
Payload: 1,300 pounds
Tested Price: $110,295

Few trucks have generated as much controversy over the past couple of years as the GMC Hummer EV. The Hummer EV has a range of 329 miles per charge, an impressive number until you look at the spec chart, which also lists a 212.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Thanks to its sidewalk-cracking curb weight of 9,640 pounds, the Hummer EV isn’t as efficient as its all-electric, three-motor powertrain would suggest. It’s still a lot of fun to drive, with these motors pushing 1,000 hp and 1,200 pound-feet of torque to the wheels. Throw it in Watts to Freedom mode and it goes to 60 in less than 4 seconds.

You feel every bit of its 5-ton curb weight when you drive on a curvy road, but the Hummer has a smooth and composed ride on the highway. Its SuperCruise driver assistance suite is also the best in the industry, offering hands-off freeway capability and automatic lane changes to get even in slow-moving traffic. And its four-wheel steering gives the Hummer EV a tighter turning radius than the much smaller Maverick, with Crab Wall adding some dubious off-road capability — but plenty of crowd-pleasing. As a toy, the Hummer EV can’t be beat. But its terrible price and dubious performance make it count in this test.

Quick stats 2022 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro 4×4 I-Force Max
engine: Twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 w/motor-generator
Output: 437 horsepower / 583 pound-feet
Stretching: 11,175 pounds
Payload: 1,600 pounds
Tested Price: $69,185

The 2022 Toyota Tundra is a wholesale improvement over its predecessor in almost every quantity, with more power and efficiency thanks to its newly available i-Force Max hybrid engine. With 437 hp and 583 lb-ft – the best of any other non-electric half-ton truck – the Tundra’s optional powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 with a motor-generator mounted inside the bell housing of a 10-speed transmission. Is. The powertrain also gets an impressive 18 mpg city, even when lugging around the extra weight of our tester’s TRD Pro off-road kit.

Speaking of which, the Tundra earned a lot of respect for its active set of rugged features. The TRD Pro features BBS forged aluminum wheels wrapped in 33-inch all-terrain tires, underbody skid plates, and fender extensions with funky digital camo detailing. TRD Pro-specific springs and remote reservoir shocks provide better articulation and performance in rough conditions, and the trim-specific bodywork both looks cool and gives better style and departure angles. Tundra was like a faithful hound — friendly and approachable and fun — but he didn’t have enough new tricks to take us away from his conqueror.

Quick stats 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat Extended Range
Motor: Dual permanent magnet motors
Output: 580 horsepower / 775 pound-feet
Stretching: 10,000 pounds
Payload: 1,952 pounds
Tested Price: $80,739

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning delivered a convincing performance in our. Star Award from the moment it came to our test. We all appreciated the combination of modern styling details and traditional F-Series proportions with the smooth ride and traditional dynamics that many current F-150 owners will probably appreciate – there’s no learning curve, just get in. Drive.

A notable exception to this orientation is the powertrain. With 580 hp and 775 lb-ft coming from its dual electric motors, our extended-range Lightning has more power and torque than any other F-150 variant except the Raptor R, which eclipses it with 700 hp. But comes up short with 680 lb. -fit The net result of all that nervousness is an incredible, smooth acceleration every time you lean on the slim pedal, plus a 10,000-pound trailer rating when equipped with the Max-Toe package.

2022 Best Truck Star Award

So the F-150 Lightning is a plain old truck when it comes to interior, driving dynamics and towing credentials, but what about its future-ready EV powertrain? Thanks to the 131.0-kWh capacity of the optional extended-range battery, it’s capable of driving 320 miles per charge – matching the Hummer EV, albeit with a much smaller, lighter battery. The extended range battery can also recharge at a maximum rate of 155 kWh. Using a DC fast charger, the Lightning will recharge from 15 to 80 percent in 41 minutes, while a home recharge will go from 15 to 100 percent in 8 hours.

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning: Star Awards

Adding to our appreciation is the massive, 14.1-cubic-foot trunk, which gives the Lightning some lockable, weatherproof storage. The Lariat model we tested also comes standard with a 9.6-kW ProPower onboard system, with four home outlets in the front, two in the cab, and four more in the bed. And if you need to run a portable welder, there’s also a 240-volt outlet in the back. The available Ford Charge Station Pro home charger can also power your home in the event of a blackout, keeping you comfortable (and your refrigerator running).

With a long list of thoughtful production features, excellent charging efficiency, admirable range, quick acceleration, and familiar driving dynamics, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is a great truck. No member of our staff had any particular complaints about the electricity, which is a testament to his honest, sincere goodness.
